Training over Yuletide
Christmas training treats with the endurance competition group.
With BB&O 2018 already consigned to the history books, it's time to think about arrangements for keeping a spot of gentle exercise going over the Christmas period. A great antidote to that extra mince pie, that final flagon of fluid or second portions of figgy pudding, but perhaps, more importantly, a way of keeping in shape for the county cross country championships that come up early in January.
As in previous years, the endurance competition group will be doing a few sessions at various venues - these sessions are open to all and wherever we are they all kick off promptly at 0900h. We are usually finished by about 1010h, so a great excuse for elevenses. The timetable this year is as follows.
Thursday 20 December - final evening session of 2018 at TP.
Saturday 22 December - our famous Monument session on the Ridgeway, now firmly established as part of the tradition that is Christmas. From Wantage take the B4494 towards Newbury. After about 3 miles you'll ascend the Ridgeway - look out for the Monument away to your left. As you crest the Ridgeway turn into the car park on your left (overspill space available on the opposite side of the road). Not that suitable for spikes, but shoes with grip advisable.
Wednesday 26th December - work up an appetite for Boxing Day lunch with our Thrupp Lake social trot. Leave from the tennis centre car park in Audlett Drive. Mass jog up to the lake (traffic free), 30 min of free choice running, mass jog back. No hills today, not suitable for spikes.
Friday 28 December - Shotover Plain for some rolling hill work. From Oxford ring road, go past the mini plant on your right and take the next slip road (by Homebase). Keep going along the Slade, over a mini roundabout and after about 600m turn right at the traffic lights. Keep going (you'll go over a bridge above the ring road) and straight on up the hill. When the tarmac runs out, you're about there.
Mon 31 December - Grove rec. Meet in the large layby on Denchworth Road. Head down the A338 towards Wantage, go past Grove and at the next big roundabout turn right. Carry on for about 400m (the Health Centre will be on the right-hand side) and when you get to the next (aeroplane) right-hand-side turn right. The layby is 300m down on the right-hand side. Flatter but a bit faster, work-up that thirst for later on. For party animals, a post-session nap may be advisable.
Thur 3 January 2019 - normal evening service resumes at TP.
