Southern Cross Country Champs
More great cross country performances from Abingdon AC athletes - report by David Bunn.
The best in the south
On Saturday, 13 Abingdon runners made the journey to Brighton’s Stanmer Park to test themselves against the best runners the South of England has to offer. The course was run on very varied terrain, with fast playing fields, stony tracks, hills and some very muddy sections (which became much slower as the races went on), leading to some demanding courses requiring endurance, speed and skill.
The Junior races got underway first, with over 200 runners in most races, and Abingdon was represented in 6 out of 8 races, with 5 top 100 performances. A special mention must go to U20 Jack Shayler, who came in 25th and only 2 minutes off the lead despite being two years younger than some of his competitors.
In the Senior races, the skies opened and the course became very slippery indeed, but a gritty performance from Cordy Parker took her to 58th out of 351. First of the Senior men’s contingent was Owen Stepney, who completed the gruelling 15km course in 122nd place out of 740.
Well done to all who braved the conditions, either competing or supporting.
